VIDEO: Wagon – "State Trooper" (Bruce Springsteen cover)

wagons_promoI call it one of the top 5 Springsteen covers of all time…you pick the rest.
From the Australian band Wagons (whose singer, Henry Wagons, is working on a solo record). The song has been a staple in the Wagons live set, and the video clip documents the band in Henry’s studio on Mount Martha on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, as they laid down the track completely live. The song is recorded without an overdub.
…and why I would love to hear Bruce do his own unhinged, fully electric official version of Nebraska.  It would never be better than the influential demo-turned-album, but appealing because of that unattainable goal.
“STATE TROOPER” – from NEBRASKA
… Bruce lets out an unhinged scream in the original as the song fades. “I don’t know if it’s even really a song or not,” Springsteen wrote in a note to Jon Landau. “It’s kinda weird.” — as told to Rolling Stone

VIDEO – "Louie Louie" – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – live in Charlotte – 4.19.14

I’m gonna call it the greatest version of the roadhouse/garage rock classic “Louie Louie” since The Kingsmen did it.  Bruce turns in a marvelously slurred vocal, a wicked and raw solo, and mines his inner Joe Strummer throughout.  The other videos from this show from somewhereinjersey75 are really good and worth investigating because the show looks like it was the best of the US dates so far in 2014.

VIDEO:" "Just Like Fire Would" – Bruce Springsteen and E St. Band

Of all the songs on Springsteen’s new High Hopes album, his cover of the song “Just Like Fire Would” by Australian punk rock band The Saints is nearest a throwback to the bar band day of the E Streeters.  When other songs on the new album are either Tom Morello-fied or loop-filled or recast versions of songs the band has been rocking on stage for a few years, this one sounds like we want the band to sound.  A musical home to come back to.  Not always staying , but regularly visiting.  What makes the mystique work for this one is the plucking of an obscure (for most) band and a song that sounds eerily like it could have been written by Bruce anyway.

VIDEO: Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon kinda screwed up his presentation

Whoops. Don't tell Brian we posted this picture with the link

I like Gaslight Anthem, but sometimes their singer (Brian Fallon)  is not too tight between songs if he decides to talk.  Love the band, think their audience believes it is more “punk” than it really is (moshing doesn’t mean you are punk), and the band  –for better or worse – is hitched to some of the Jersey rock and roll lineage.  I’d embrace it.  Mostly, they have.

Great piece on the NPR site about the night Fallon told the”Bruuuuce”-ers to shut up.

Last weekend the Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon lashed out at his audience; an audience that had already been lashed by winds and rain during what was pretty terrific set in a spectacular new waterfront venue in lower Manhattan.
