Host Andrew Funke and engineer “Deacon” Tim’s Back Road Radio Show is a weekly hour-long prodcution (8:30-9:30pm Wednesdays on 91.9 WITT) that not only taps into the regional/local alt-country, Americana, and roots talent pool, but has also scored a national guest, when they talked with Elizabeth Cook, as she was through Indy on a tour stop sandwiched between an Opry performance and another gig in Chicago. + see full guest list
The show audio is immaculate, Funke’s questions are informed, and he actually listens to answers, then follows up on them nicely. They do a great job of taking a show that’s on a small station, and extending it to a website so we can catch it on demand. It is the type of program that is seemingly too niche for a bigger station (though I would quickly argue otherwise) and excels because it is true to itself – it sounds honest. And the guests they have brought in during the short life of the program have been an impressive group of working, touring (even if only in Indiana or the Midwest), talented singers and songwriters.
And now, they have posted a video of Indy singer/songwriter Cari Ray performing in their “studio bunker”. Again, a superb audio capture, and a good performance from Ray, who has upcoming shows at Muldoon’s in Carmel July 15, Kilroy’s In Indy July 22 and at the Britton Tavern in Fishers/Noblesville on July 29.

The show is on hiatus until July 14, but the archives are online.

New Todd Snider and the Eastside Bulldogs video
Todd Snider has evolved from young 20-something strummer, playing Jerry Jeff Walker tunes around Austin because he felt he must, to a straight-up, full-blown rock and roll band leader with the should-be-and-maybe-they-are legendary Nervous Wrecks, to now having built a seemingly solid career as a barefoot neo-folkie who can whip your ass with his lyrics. Along the way, he’s proven himself to be the singer of great songs, writer of words that show his near-genius respect and understanding of the human condition, and smoked a lot of weed.
VIDEO – Justin Townes Earle- "Mama's Eyes"
To prove that not all kids of famous people are riding the coattails of their parents, Justin Townes Earle (Dad=Steve) proves his understated brilliance again, with this live studio performance recorded at Paste Magazine earlier this month. He just came through Indy again and is on tour. Great voice, with hints of Dad, but….well, just watch and listen.

VIDEO – Bruce Springsteen – Hope for Haiti – "We Shall Overcome"
One of the musical highlights of the night. Gorgeous version of the classsic song “We Shall Overcome”, with great solos in the middle from Charlie Giordano (E Street keyboardist who sits where Danny Federici used to) and Curt Ramm (trumpet player who toured with Bruce on the back end of 2009, adding another layer of excellence to the band). The song was part of the repertoire of the Seeger Sessions Band a few years ago for Bruce.

VIDEO: Cracker – Happy Birthday to Me
Here’s one of those bands that just keeps making very good music. I love Cracker. They live in that musical place of bands who are road rockers, just a little good crazy but smart too, and like to play that three-chord two-guitar rock and roll, and do it dirty and inspired. A friend sent this to me today. I give to you. Enjoy the simplicity, the sentiment and the backbeat.

VIDEO: UNC's Roy Williams Decides Fan Must Leave
One from basketball that is just plain weird: This reeks of ego and acting like a poor man’s Bob Knight. Saturday, North Carolina coach Roy Williams (in the midst of watching his Tar Heels romp past Presbyterian 103-64) decided he didn’t like a fan from the visiting team telling one of UNC’s players to miss a free throw – the quote I am hearing is the fan yelled “Don’t miss it Deon” – and Roy had the guy forcibly removed from the game.
Watch the cops get a little aggressive with the offender, who doesn’t look like he’s a steroid-takin’, whiskey-soaked fan. More like a, uh, team supporter and hoops fan. Even has his school’s golf shirt on. Just more than a little odd. Maybe more will come out about the event, but the early forecast is for Williams to take a little shit for this one. His postgame press conference seems to hint that he may have been uncomfortable, knowing he might have stepped into the moment a but too aggressively.
